22 Feared Dead As Terrorists Ambush Traders Travelling Under Nigerian Army Escort In Zamfara

The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026, along the route connecting Gurusu to Gwashi in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where the traders were heading to participate in the community’s weekly market.

No fewer than 22 people, including security personnel, have been reportedly killed by suspected terrorists who ambushed traders travelling under Nigerian Army escort to a weekly market in Zamfara State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026, along the route connecting Gurusu to Gwashi in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where the traders were heading to participate in the community’s weekly market.

A resident, Malam Aminu Gwashi, confirmed the incident, saying the assault left several people dead, including members of the security team escorting the traders, according to Leadership Newspaper.

The resident said other victims sustained injuries and were transported to Bukkuyum General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The attack has renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity in Bukkuyum and neighbouring communities, where repeated assaults by suspected bandits have threatened residents’ safety and disrupted commercial activities.

The ambush also raises concerns about the safety of traders travelling under military protection in rural parts of Zamfara, where weekly markets remain important sources of livelihood for residents and surrounding communities.

As of the time of filing this report, SaharaReporters has not been able to get the comments of the Nigerian Army and the Zamfara State Police Command to confirm the incident or provide details of the casualties.

Meanwhile, a journalist, Malik Samuel, said that four soldiers, three policemen, one civil defence personnel, and 19 civilians died in the attack.

“Bandits in Zamfara this afternoon attacked a military-led convoy of civilians from Gwashi heading to Nasarawa Market in Bukkuyum local government area,” he said in a post on X.

“A couple of soldiers and a policeman were among the casualties, with 12 bodies of civilians recovered so far. The incident happened between Gwashi and Gurusu.

“The attack was most likely carried out by Muhammad Gwaska. There is a scarcity of blood at Anka General Hospital, where the wounded were evacuated.”
