2027:Sowore promises drone taxis to beat Lagos traffic if elected president, says Nigerians could fly to work by 2030
Omoyele Sowore has outlined plans to transform transportation in Nigeria, saying he would encourage drone taxis, develop inland waterways and tackle flooding if elected president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview, the activist and politician said he would dredge a waterway linking the Lagos Lagoon to Epe, creating an alternative transport route while helping to address the state’s drainage challenges.
According to him, the project would allow residents to travel directly from the lagoon to Epe without getting trapped in traffic, likening the proposed development to Amsterdam’s waterways.
Sowore also criticised Lagos’ drainage system, arguing that waterways and dikes could help reduce flooding. He said Nigeria should simultaneously explore air transportation technology, including drone taxis.
When asked whether the service could become a reality under his administration, he said he would allow companies developing drone transportation to test their technology in Nigeria.
He predicted that Nigerians could begin using drone taxis within his first four years in office, explaining that the electric aircraft would not require conventional airports or helicopter landing facilities to reach destinations such as Lekki.
Sowore also argued that the technology’s collision-avoidance systems could make it more difficult for kidnappers to target passengers, while recalling how soldiers struggled to intercept commercial drones monitoring elections in 2019.
He said Nigeria could become a major centre for drone taxi manufacturing and transportation, confirming that the aircraft would run on batteries as part of the country’s transition towards green energy.
He further projected that drone taxis could transport about 200,000 workers to their workplaces in Abuja by 2030 or 2035.
When the interviewer questioned the timeline, noting that a president elected in 2027 would finish a first term in 2031, Sowore said infrastructure should outlive the administrations that build it.
