2027: Nigerians Don’t Want ‘Emi Lokan’ – Makinde Mocks Tinubu

According to Daily post, the Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s “Emi Lokan” slogan, saying Nigerians should not be subjected to what he described as “turn-by-turn nepotism” ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Makinde argued that the decision on who becomes Nigeria’s next president should be determined collectively by Nigerians rather than based on the belief that the presidency belongs to a particular individual or region.

DAILY POST reports that the governor made the remarks on Thursday during the APM town hall meeting in Akure, Ondo State, where he presented his vision for the country ahead of the next general election.

The governor questioned the idea behind Tinubu’s popular “Emi Lokan” expression, which means “It is my turn” in Yoruba and became prominent during the 2023 presidential election campaign.

Makinde recalled the 1999 presidential election, when former presidential candidate Olu Falae received substantial support in the South-West, while former President Olusegun Obasanjo secured votes from other parts of the country.

According to him, the historical example showed that presidential elections should not be treated as matters that only a particular region can determine.

“How can someone say, ‘Eemi lokan’, in a country like Nigeria?” Makinde asked.

He added that Nigerians must collectively address the question of leadership instead of allowing regional considerations to dominate the process
