The latest escalation began after the United States military announced that it had launched a series of strikes against Iran in response to attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US military, it had begun launching a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran following attacks on commercial ships, including Qatari and Saudi Arabian oil tankers navigating the vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime routes, with a significant portion of global crude oil exports passing through the narrow channel each day. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), three tankers were struck by projectiles while navigating the strategic waterway that links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.
The latest incidents come as governments and the shipping industry were hoping to restore normal maritime operations following weeks of heightened tensions arising from the conflict between the United States and Iran.
One of the vessels, a liquefied natural gas tanker, caught fire after it was struck while sailing off the coast of Oman. The UKMTO reported that the ship was attacked near Limah, Oman, as it attempted to travel south through the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman.
According to the agency, the projectile struck the port side of the tanker. Despite the impact, it said there were no environmental consequences from the incident, adding that investigations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Iranian state television reported that the liquefied natural gas tanker came under attack after allegedly ignoring warnings. However, it did not directly claim responsibility for the incident.
The broadcaster, quoting anonymous sources, also suggested that Tehran carried out the assault on a tanker it said was transporting natural gas from Qatar. Nevertheless, there was no official claim from the Islamic Republic regarding the attack.
