Tinubu Influences Jonathan Removal As ECOWAS Election Observer As House Of Rep Set To Probe Him
In less than 24 hours after ECOWAS dropped former President Good Luck Jonathan and picked former Nigerian vice president , Yemi Osibanjo as the leader of its Election Observer team for the Côte d’Ivoire elections, Nigeria’s House of Reps announced its move to probe the Jonathan’s administration.
According to the House of Assembly, former president Jonathan will be probed for the $460m Chinese loan his government secured to procure and install Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTV) in strategic locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The declaration by the current leadership of the Nigeria’s House of Representatives has elicited different reactions from Nigerians. Some believe that the former president is being targeted by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over his speculated 2027 presidential ambition.
It is interesting to note that the said loan was taken in 2010, 15 years ago. Also, the current members of the House of Representatives have been in office for over two years, but didn’t find a need to probe Jonathan.
Their probe comes in the wake of obvious moves by Jonathan to contest the 2027 Presidential elections, against Tinubu, who is desperate to get re-elected.
Also, president Tinubu wields strong influence on ECOWAS is believed to have a hand in Jonathan’s removal as the leader of the ECOWAS Election Observers Team
Additionally, the majority of the House of Representatives members are perceived as the president’s political puppets who pursue and protect the his interest even at the expense of Nigerians or the Nigeria’s interest. This is exampled by the controversial state of emergency imposed on Rivers state by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and which was validated by the members of the House of Representatives despite the public outcry against the president’s state of emergency declaration.
While 2027 general election is still months away, the Nigeria’s political atmosphere is intensely charged amid the questionable economic policies of the current Tinubu’s administration.
The calls for former president Jonathan to make a return to the political scene have taken a more serious tone. The former president who became the first Nigerian incumbent president to be defeated in a presidential election, has emerged one of the popular choices across the sections of the country.
