The Courts Must Never Become Instruments For Political Manipulation Of Partisan Interests–Jonathan

According to a report by Punch on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concern over the growing influence of political thuggery in Nigeria, describing the situation as a serious threat to the country’s democratic development and electoral credibility.

Jonathan made the remarks on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Bar Association Law Week held in Abuja, where he addressed legal professionals, public officials, and other participants on issues affecting governance, democracy, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

During his speech, the former president stated that Nigeria appears to be one of the few countries in Africa where political thuggery has gradually evolved into what many now treat as a profession.

He explained that violent political activities and the use of youths for electoral intimidation have become deeply rooted in the country’s political system over the years.

According to him, the increasing acceptance of such practices has negatively affected democratic values and weakened public confidence in the electoral process.

Jonathan also raised concerns about the social and economic realities surrounding political violence in the country.

He noted that it is becoming common to see individuals associated with political thuggery living more comfortably than professionals who contribute positively to society.

He referred to situations where people involved in disruptive political activities appear to enjoy financial benefits and privileges that sometimes surpass those available to respected professionals such as university lecturers and academics.

According to him, such developments send dangerous signals to younger generations and encourage the wrong priorities within society.

The former president stressed the importance of conducting credible elections and discouraging all forms of electoral malpractice.

He stated that violence during elections undermines democracy and weakens trust in public institutions.

According to him, many African countries have managed to conduct elections without widespread involvement of youths in violent political activities, adding that Nigeria must work toward creating a more peaceful and transparent democratic environment.

He explained that elections should reflect the genuine will of the people rather than outcomes influenced by intimidation or unlawful practices.

Goodluck Jonathan also warned that democracy becomes vulnerable when critical institutions responsible for protecting democratic values are weakened.

He emphasized the need to strengthen institutions such as the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, noting that their independence is essential for maintaining public trust in elections and governance.

According to him, strong institutions are necessary to ensure fairness, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in the country.

Speaking further at the event, Jonathan cautioned the judiciary against allowing itself to become an instrument for political manipulation.

He explained that courts play a central role in protecting democracy and must remain impartial in handling electoral disputes and political cases.

He stressed that judicial institutions should not be influenced by powerful political interests seeking to overturn the will of the people through legal processes.

According to him, the integrity of the judiciary remains one of the most important pillars of democratic governance and national stability.
