The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered firearms alongside ₦6.9 million cash following a lone accident in Kokona Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the incident happened on Monday, August 18, 2025, around 9:08 a.m. near the VIO checkpoint, Angwan Mayo.

According to him, two occupants of an Opel Vectra with registration number PLATEAU BLD 566 ST abandoned the car and fled into the bush after it crashed.

“A vigilant VIO officer discovered a G3 rifle and cash concealed inside the vehicle before operatives arrived at the scene,” Nansel said.

Further searches uncovered one AK-47 rifle, one type 06 rifle, another G3 rifle, three magazines, 57 rounds of live ammunition, and ₦6.9 million.

A joint police-military operation was immediately launched, leading to the arrest of one suspect identified as Mohammed Tahir from Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, while attempting to escape through the forest.

During interrogation, Tahir confessed to belonging to a seven-man kidnapping gang responsible for the abduction of a lawyer in Nyanya, Abuja, where ransom was collected. He also revealed they were heading to Jos to share the proceeds when the accident occurred.

All recovered exhibits and the suspect have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Shettima Jauro Mohammed.

The CP assured residents of continued efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, commending the public for their vigilance and urging stronger collaboration with security agencies.
