Outrage as Bilyaminu Bello’s Family Slams Tinubu’s Pardon for Maryam Sanda: “The Worst Injustice Imaginable”

The family of late Bilyaminu Bello has condemned the presidential pardon granted to his wife, Maryam Sanda, who was convicted and sentenced to death for his murder, calling it “the worst possible injustice any family could ever endure.”

In a statement issued on Monday by Dr. Bello Mohammed, the family said President Bola Tinubu’s decision to include Sanda among the 175 inmates pardoned under the Prerogative of Mercy had “reopened painful wounds that had barely healed.”

The statement read:

“To have Maryam Sanda walk the earth again, free from any blemish for her heinous crime as if she merely squashed an ant, is the worst injustice any family could go through.”

The family accused the government of undermining the judiciary and appeasing the convict’s family, while ignoring the agony of those left behind by Bilyaminu’s death.

They also recalled that Sanda’s conviction — upheld by both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court — had offered them some closure before the pardon shattered it.

“This latest turn of events has reopened our wounds,” the statement continued. “It dehumanises our son and reduces him to just another statistic.”

While expressing deep disappointment, the family said they would leave ultimate justice to “the Supreme Judge and Creator.”
