Addressing Nigeria’s Insecurity: A Call to Return to First Principles

The state of insecurity in our nation cannot be ignored. Many believe it has been worsened by political manipulation — recall how the Goodluck Jonathan administration was sabotaged, undermined, and how borders were left open to armed groups from across the region, making the country increasingly ungovernable.

Yet today, public blame is directed at the presidency, even though the Constitution clearly designates state governors as the chief security officers of their respective states. Accountability must align with constitutional responsibility.

The Bible asks: “Can two walk together unless they agree?” [Amos 3:3]. Nigeria is a federation of peoples with vastly different histories, religions, cultures, and expectations. That diversity is our strength, but only if we govern by consent and mutual agreement.

For this reason, Nigeria must urgently revisit the spirit of the Aburi Agreement — the framework crafted by some of our best minds to preserve unity through true federalism and regional autonomy. It was a blueprint for a Nigeria where diverse peoples could coexist with dignity and self-determination.

I call on the National Assembly to immediately convene and pass a resolution to implement the core principles of the Aburi Agreement. The current arrangement, a forced marriage of mismatched partners, is no longer working.

It’s time to restructure, reconcile, and rebuild — before it’s too late.
