Appalled by the revelation of the Ad-hoc Committee investigating the financial recklessness in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to a whopping N81.5 billion by tje Interim Management Committee (IMC), Senator Smart Adeyemi representing Kogi East Senatorial district has suggested amputation of anyone found culpable.
The Kogi lawmaker argued that Niger Delta is the revenue hub of the country and the NDDC was created for the devlopment of the region, noting that what is happening there with regards to financial recklessness calls for capital punishment that should not be less than physical amputation of culprits.
Commending the ad-hoc Committee Chairman, Senator Olubunmi Adetukunmbi, for a.detailed report, Adeyemi said the exercise was is in conformity with section 88 of the Constitution.
“We have seen the financial recklessness in the agency and I do not expect anything less.
“The people of Niger Delta are living in abject poverty. I compare their plight to that of Soweto. The corruption in Niger Delta Development Commission has put their people in perpetual poverty.
“Let’s call a spade a spade and in Nigeria, we are Christians; we are all Muslims and in the Bible, there is what we call Mosaic law, and in Qur’an, there is what they call Sharia law and we must apply this laws so that they can be amputation of looters of NDDC.
Adeyemi insisted that Senate must consider amendment of laws that would consider the amputation – sanctioning so that such a thing would not happen again. He added that fight against corruption is the bedrock of this administration, noting that the Senate could leverage on this to make it possible to get at those looting the agency.
“We must consider this when we come back from our annual leave. They ask the people of the Niger Delta to manage their agency, yet see what they are doing to themselves.
“Spending the sum of N81.5 billion in three months is unreasonable.
In his contribution, Senator Solomon Adeola Olamileku decried how the sum of N4.5 billion was spent frivously in a day.
“We have seen corruption being displayed at the highest level. The mantra of this administration is to fight corruption and the sum of N4.5 billion was spent in a day and very disheartening is that it was spent frivolously.
“I was told that revenue inflow from oil companies in Niger Delta comes in dollars and there was a time, companies have to pay differences amount to billions and I don’t know if it was captured in the report.
“We are the one that made the law establishing the NDDC and we must rescue the agency from those milking it.
“Mr. President, we must look into the Act and incorporate the suggestions of the Ad-hoc Committee.
