Man, Accomplice Arrested In Edo For Allegedly Faking Kidnapping, Demanding N4Million Ransom From Relatives
According to the police, the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Igarra Division on June 26, 2026, following intelligence that exposed the alleged plot.
The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly staging the fake kidnapping of one of them in a bid to extort ₦4 million from his relatives.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, identifying the suspects as Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37, both of Uneme Akpama Community in Edo State.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Igarra Division on June 26, 2026, following intelligence that exposed the alleged plot.
The statement said the investigation revealed that the fake kidnapping was orchestrated on June 23, when Enahoro allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives and falsely claimed that he had been abducted.
“Acting on credible intelligence and through diligent investigative efforts, police operatives uncovered the deception and successfully arrested both suspects,” the statement read.
It added, “Preliminary investigation reveals that the criminal plan was executed on 23rd June, 2026, when Taiye Enahoro allegedly placed several telephone calls to relatives of Lucky Alabi, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding the sum of Four Million Naira (₦4,000,000) as ransom for his release.”
The police said both suspects had admitted to their roles in the alleged scheme.
“The suspects have confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation,” the statement added.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, warned residents against engaging in criminal deception, including faking kidnappings to extort money from family members.
“The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, warns members of the public against engaging in any form of criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from unsuspecting relatives,” the statement said.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s resolve to prosecute offenders.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring all persons involved in criminal acts are brought to justice,” the statement added.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
