Lagos Traders Protest Single-Use Plastic Ban, Claiming it’s “Anti-People”
The Lagos State Government’s enforcement of a ban on single-use nylon and plastic products has ignited outrage among traders, who deem the policy ill-conceived and detrimental to their livelihoods.
The ban, effective July 1, 2025, aims to mitigate environmental issues, but traders argue it will exacerbate economic hardship without adequate alternatives or government support.
Mushin market traders expressed frustration, feeling unfairly punished for a problem they didn’t create. They contend that inadequate waste disposal education and enforcement are the true culprits.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab confirmed enforcement would proceed despite market associations’ resistance, citing the policy’s role in combating flooding and plastic pollution.
Traders demand:
