Terrorists are reportedly demanding that the police and other security personnel leave the area.

They are also threatening residents with violent violence if they do not cooperate with the authorities.

The actual origins of Ansaru are unknown, however it is believed that the group arose from a subset of Boko Haram, an extremist Islamist organisation that launched an insurrection against Nigeria’s government in 2009.

Over 36,500 people have been slain and over two million have fled their homes as a result of the violence.

Apart from the main Boko Haram group and Ansaru, there is also a faction affiliated to the Islamic State.
