ISWAP Fighter’s Wife Surrenders To Troops In Borno With Two-Month-Old Baby

According to the sources, Bakwai said she escaped from the ISWAP enclave at Dogon Chuku while her husband and other fighters were away from the camp.

Awoman identified as the wife of a fighter belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai along with her two-month-old baby in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Intelligence sources told security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama that the woman, identified as Falmata Bakwai, surrendered to troops of the 19 Brigade at Cross Kauwa at about 10:15 a.m. on June 26.

According to the sources, Bakwai said she escaped from the ISWAP enclave at Dogon Chuku while her husband and other fighters were away from the camp.

During a preliminary debriefing, she reportedly told troops that worsening living conditions inside the enclave, particularly acute shortages of food and other basic necessities, forced her to flee.

The sources attributed the deteriorating conditions in the camp to sustained military offensives, including ground operations and aerial bombardments targeting terrorist hideouts.

Bakwai and her infant have since been placed in quarantine and are receiving medical care in accordance with established operational procedures.

Military authorities said debriefing is ongoing, while arrangements are being made to transfer her to the Headquarters of Sector 3, Operation Hadin Kai/Multinational Joint Task Force, for further investigation and profiling.

Security sources said the surrender reflects the sustained pressure being exerted on terrorist enclaves through coordinated ground and air operations across Nigeria’s North-East.
