ICYMI: T-Pain sues Akon’s label over ‘$489k unpaid royalties’
T-Pain, the American singer, has sued 0pKonvict Entertainment, the record label founded by Akon, over alleged unpaid royalties from his music catalogue.
According to documents obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Grammy winner, whose real name is Faheem Najm, filed the lawsuit against his former label, claiming that Konvict Entertainment, formerly Konvict Muzik, owes him $489,047 in royalties generated from his recordings.
The 80-page documents were filed in Fulton county superior court on September 4.
According to the lawsuit, a distributor paid Konvict $1.3 million in royalties earlier this year. T-Pain, however, alleged that he received only half of the amount he was entitled to.
The 41-year-old further accused the label of breaching a settlement agreement reached in an earlier legal dispute between them.
T-Pain had sued Konvict in 2018, alleging that the label failed to pay an agreed advance for his album ‘Oblivion’. The dispute was settled last year.
The singer now claims the terms of the settlement were violated, prompting the latest lawsuit.
T-Pain began his professional music career after recording a personalised version of Akon’s hit song ‘Locked Up’.
Impressed by the track, Akon signed him to Konvict Muzik, where he released his debut studio album ‘Rappa Ternt Sanga’ in 2005.
The album produced hit singles including ‘I’m Sprung’ and ‘I’m ‘n Luv (Wit a Stripper)’ and helped establish T-Pain as a prominent figure in R&B and hip-hop.
