Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia have killed the traditional ruler of Gwande District in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Saf Samuel Alaket, in a deadly ambush while he was returning from a traditional council meeting at the Bokkos council headquarters.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the assailants reportedly laid ambush on his vehicle at about 7:30pm near the boundary between Sha District and Daffo community, close to his hometown, and opened fire on it.
Eyewitnesses said the attack left the monarch critically injured, as he sustained severe gunshot wounds during the assault.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment, where he was later confirmed dead.
A community leader and member of the late district head’s council, Peter Gwande, confirmed the incident, describing the killing as a painful loss to the Gwande community, Bokkos Local Government Area and Plateau State at large.
He added that the attack has thrown the traditional council and residents into mourning.
A youth leader in the area, Christopher Luka, said the incident created tension in the community but noted that security operatives had since brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, attempts to get a reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, did not respond to calls or messages sent to him.
