IN his determination to ensure that Chairmen elected into the 31 local government Councils of Akwa Ibom state operate from their respective local government areas governor Umo Eno has flagged-off the construction of official residence for them.

Eno, while performing laying of the Foundation stone at Eket local government area on Friday, identified Local government councils Chairmen as key partners of his administration’s rural development agenda

He noted that the residence is expected to be completed within a period of six months a and expressed hope that other 30 local government areas of the state would provide the land for the project execution.

He emphasized that all LG Council chairmen must live in their respective areas or face the full weight of the law, stressing that the initiative was conceived to assist him share in the feelings of the people, understand their needs and devise means of solving their problems.

He stressed: “One of our cardinal campaign promises and our policy is rural development, and we cannot do rural development without partnering with the local Government and Chairmen of councils.

They need to stay in their domains so that we can work with them to develop our local Government areas.

“We thank God for a day like this, and as we lay this foundation, we use this as point of contact to touch the other 30 local Government Areas and we hope that they will quickly provide the land and make sure that the places are ready,”

In his remark, the Transition Chairman of Eket Local gover, Hon Akaninyene Tommey appreciated the Governor for the initiative, saying it would help to boost local government administration.

Giving an overview of the project, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Frank Archibong noted that the facility was designed with five structures including; main building, 50 seater capacity hall, generator house, boys quarters, and gate house.

Speaking on behalf of the Local government Council chairmen, the Chairman of ALGON, Mr Iniobong Robson appreciated the Governor for the payment of arreas of gratuities, pension, and other incentives to workers at the local government level.
