DSS arrests two suspects over killing of four soldiers in Delta

The Department of State Services has arrested two suspects in connection with the 2023 killing of four soldiers during a peace mission in Delta State, marking a major breakthrough in the long-running investigation.

The suspects, Ufuoma Sunday James and Lawrence Umuakpero Oboguayivwgue, were apprehended over their alleged roles in the ambush of troops deployed to Ashaka Aboh in February 2023. The soldiers were sent to quell clashes between the Kwale and Asemoku communities when they were attacked by armed hoodlums, leading to their deaths and the theft of their weapons.

Security sources said the duo were also implicated in the killing of Chief Okwudili Obi, popularly known as Odumodu, a self-styled traditional ruler in Asemoku community, during the same period of unrest.

According to the sources, DSS operatives had tracked the suspects for over a year and acted on actionable intelligence that led to their arrest in January 2026. The suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the killings and admitted participation in other crimes, including gun-running and kidnapping.

James and Oboguayivwgue have since been arraigned before a State High Court in Kwale and remanded in a correctional facility pending trial.

The arrests underscore the DSS’s resolve to pursue justice in unresolved cases, regardless of how much time has passed.
