Delta Police Nab Suspected Human Trafficker, Rescue Victim
The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected human trafficker and rescued a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly lured to Côte d’Ivoire under the guise of learning a hairdressing trade before being forced into prostitution.
The command disclosed the development in a statement by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, saying the arrest followed a petition alleging that 26-year-old Ese Betty Isiorho deceived the victim with the promise of learning a hairdressing trade in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the police, investigations revealed that upon arriving in the foreign country, the victim was allegedly forced into prostitution.
The statement said operatives of the Effurun Area Command acted swiftly on the petition and arrested the suspect, who confessed during interrogation to trafficking the victim and another young woman in her twenties to Côte d’Ivoire.
The suspect allegedly admitted that both women were handed over to a woman identified only as Madam Purity for the purpose of prostitution.
The police added that following sustained investigative efforts and collaboration, the 25-year-old victim was successfully rescued and returned to Nigeria.
She has since been reunited with her family and is receiving medical attention, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of the second victim, who is still believed to be in Côte d’Ivoire, and to apprehend other members of the trafficking syndicate.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling human trafficking and organised crime.
He said the command remained committed to “combating human trafficking and other forms of organised crimes.”
The commissioner also urged residents “to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious recruitment schemes and trafficking-related activities to the Police.”
