CAN Fires Back at Presidency, Insists Ongoing Killings Amount to “Christian Genocide”
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has responded strongly to the Presidency’s recent comments dismissing claims of targeted attacks against Christians in the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, CAN accused the Presidency of deliberately twisting its position and downplaying the scale of violence faced by Christian communities, especially in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt.
According to CAN, the pattern of attacks on churches, clergy, and predominantly Christian villages clearly shows that what is happening “is not just random insecurity, but a systematic persecution aimed at wiping out Christian populations from their ancestral lands.”
The association lamented that while the government continues to label the killings as “farmers-herders clashes” or “banditry,” the facts on the ground suggest otherwise. It cited recent massacres in Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and Taraba States, where hundreds have lost their lives and entire communities have been displaced.
CAN urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to stop politicizing the issue and instead take decisive action to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity
The group also called on international human rights organizations and global Christian bodies to pay closer attention to what it described as a “silent genocide” being ignored by the authorities.
“We cannot remain silent while our brothers and sisters are being slaughtered in their homes and places of worship. The government must rise above denial and confront this evil head-on,” CAN stated.
The Presidency had earlier dismissed the association’s comments as “exaggerated and divisive,” a stance that has now deepened tensions between the two institutions.
