Are Flyovers More Important Than Industries?

There’s a new norm in town, and it’s governors publicly boasting about how many roads they’ve “fixed” or built and which state now has the most flyovers. More states have better roads and flyovers than ever before, yet nothing is happening in those states.

People are still just riding keke (as it is commonly known), bikes, and doing menial jobs because the state government refuses to create an enabling environment for new industries and investments to take off. It’s just a bunch of beautiful roads and flyovers, with lots of jobless citizens in the background, as a good number of states cannot even boast of three industries in the entire state.

Some people argue that roads and flyovers are infrastructures that are integral to a state’s development, and I agree. But most of the time they become the governors’ main and often only focus, which sidelines the other basic need: creating an enabling environment for industries to spring up and thrive.

That environment, in turn, would create jobs, spark creativity, and supercharge businesses, dramatically boosting the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.
