Amotekun Arrests Over 10 Hausa Hunters With Guns, Charms in Ekiti Forest
Security operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ekiti State have reportedly arrested more than ten Hausa men in Okemesi-Ekiti after allegedly discovering locally made guns and other dangerous objects in their possession.
According to reports from the community, the suspects were intercepted during a routine security operation. During the search, the security team reportedly found locally fabricated guns, axes, knives, and traditional charms inside their bags, raising suspicion among the operatives and residents.
Following their arrest, the men were taken into custody for questioning. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly claimed they were hunters who had traveled to the area to hunt wild animals in the forest. They denied any connection to terrorism, banditry, or other criminal activities.
The incident has sparked conversations about security concerns, especially as many communities across the country remain on high alert due to rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.
Residents say the presence of individuals carrying weapons in unfamiliar forests can easily raise alarm, particularly in a time when security agencies and local vigilante groups are working to prevent criminal activities in rural areas.
Community members have advised that hunters traveling from other regions should be cautious and properly identify themselves to local authorities or indigenous hunting groups before entering forests outside their states.
While the Yoruba and Hausa communities have historically maintained peaceful relationships and coexistence across Nigeria, locals say safety precautions are necessary to avoid misunderstandings that could escalate tensions.
Observers also noted that the South-West region operates the Amotekun security network alongside the Nigerian Police and other security agencies, making it important for anyone entering forests or rural areas with hunting equipment to be properly cleared to avoid suspicion.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest as investigations into the matter continue.
