Poverty Is Not a Shameful Thing — Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said poverty should not be regarded as something shameful, but stressed that it is unacceptable and that Nigerians must work towards overcoming it.

The President made the remarks while addressing members of his cabinet and top management officials of the civil service during the closing ceremony of a three-day cabinet retreat at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu said poverty was not something people should feel ashamed of, noting that individuals and societies could experience difficult economic circumstances at different stages of their history.
However, he maintained that Nigerians should not accept poverty as a permanent condition, urging collective efforts to improve the country’s economic situation.
“Poverty is not a shameful thing, but it’s not just acceptable. If you check your history, there’s a trace of poverty in it, but we should find a way to dig ourselves out of it,” the President said.
Tinubu further called on members of his cabinet and other government officials to work together towards changing Nigeria’s economic situation and creating greater prosperity for citizens.
He stressed that overcoming poverty required commitment, cooperation and a collective sense of responsibility from both government officials and Nigerians.
The President also urged members of his administration to put aside personal ambitions and focus on the country’s development, reminding them that their positions came with responsibilities to millions of Nigerians.
His comments have continued to attract public attention, particularly amid ongoing conversations about poverty, the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
The remarks were made during a cabinet retreat in November 2023, rather than a new statement in November 2026
