3 killed in road crash involving  governor’s convoy

Three people have died in a road crash at Gidan Mangoro community on Minna-Bida Road, Niger State.

The accident occurred on Monday following a head-on collision between a Hilux van traveling in the convoy of the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago and a private car.

A resident of Gidan Mangoro, Danjuma Umar, told Daily Trust that the accident happened around 11 am when the governor was returning from Bida.

He said the occupants of the private car were suspected to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

“The people in the private car died instantly, while those in the government Hilux were seriously injured.

“The accident was caused by a wrongful overtaking by the Hilux in the governor’s convoy. The other car was in their lane when the Hilux rammed into them,” he said.

He said the private vehicle was driven by a woman who was a resident of Gidan Mangoro community.

A staff member of the Minna General Hospital, however, told Daily Trust that two people were brought to the hospital dead, while the third person died at the hospital’s emergency unit where he was hospitalised.

Some of the injured victims were referred to the IBB Specialist Hospital for advanced treatment.

Daily Trust gathered that one of the occupants of the Hilux van was a former council chairman whose legs got fractured.

The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the crash.

She, however, said before her men could arrive at the scene, the victims had been evacuated.

She also confirmed that there were casualties but could not give the number of people involved.
