Delta Education Director Surrenders To Police Over Deputy Director’s Death

THE Director of Exams and Standards in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, Mrs Clementina Ufuoma Ojumah, has turned herself in to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Asaba over the death of a Deputy Director in the ministry, Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda.

Ojumah’s decision to report to the police came amid an expanding investigation into the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death following an alleged confrontation at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.

Police sources reportedly confirmed that Ojumah was taken into custody for questioning as investigators continued efforts to establish what transpired before Adeda’s death.

The development reportedly brings the number of persons in police custody over the matter to six.

The case followed allegations that Adeda was assaulted during an incident involving officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education.

Among those being investigated is Commissioner Ashibogwu, who has denied ordering or participating in any assault on the deceased.

Ashibogwu has reportedly given his own account of the incident, maintaining that he went to the scene after receiving information concerning Adeda’s alleged conduct and that the deceased attacked him during the confrontation.

The police have said they are examining evidence that could shed light on the incident, including video footage, eyewitness testimony and medical records.

Earlier in the investigation, the police arrested Lucky Adoh, while Enos Attah and Oputa Okestine were declared wanted following allegations contained in a complaint over the alleged assault.

The Delta State Government has also constituted an eight-member administrative panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.

However, the panel has faced opposition from the deceased’s family and members of his home community in Otovwodo, Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The community reportedly rejected the panel, citing the absence of representatives of the deceased’s family and community.

It also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding action over the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.

Meanwhile, there have been claims that Ashibogwu is seeking assistance from the state government to help secure his exoneration from the allegations against him.

The claim, however, has not been independently verified by credible sources and therefore remains an allegation rather than an established fact.

As the police investigation progresses, the central questions remain what happened during the confrontation involving Adeda, what caused his death, and whether anyone should face criminal charges over the incident.

The outcome of the police investigation and any subsequent prosecutorial action is expected to provide further clarity on the matter.
