Lagos Police Inspector Killed By Hit-And-Run SUV While On Presidential Route-Lining Duty
According to a police situation report from the Yaba Police Division obtained by SaharaReporters, the registration number of the vehicle and the identity of its driver were not immediately known.
Apolice officer attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station in Lagos State has died after being hit by a black Highlander SUV while crossing the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at about 2:25pm on September 29, 2026, at the Adekunle intersection of the bridge, inward Lagos Island, while the officer was reportedly on route-lining duty for a presidential movement.
The victim, a female officer identified as Inspector Mercy Bassey, was reportedly hit by the SUV while crossing the road.

The report said the driver did not stop after hitting the police officer but sped away from the scene
Patrol officers on duty reportedly pursued the fleeing vehicle, but the driver managed to escape to an unknown destination.
Bassey was subsequently rushed to the General Hospital, Ebute Metta, for medical attention.
However, the police officer reportedly died while awaiting treatment at the hospital.
The police said her remains would be moved to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.
Following the incident, an investigation was commenced by the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
The police said investigators were also working to obtain CCTV footage from Control 5, Adekunle, which could assist in identifying the vehicle and its driver.
The development was detailed in a situation report from the Superintendent of Police in Yaba to the Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Ikeja. The Commissioner of Police, Department of Finance and Administration, was also informed.
The police said efforts are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash and facilitate the arrest of the driver.
