Meet Prof. Ummu Ahmed Jalingo: Married at 16, now Northern Nigeria’s first female Professor of Economics
Professor Ummu Ahmed Jalingo’s journey from becoming a wife at 16 to reaching the highest academic rank in Economics is one marked by perseverance, determination and a strong commitment to education.

The renowned economist and academic recently recounted her experience while speaking as a guest at an event organised by the Centre for Information Development and Technology (CITAD) in Kano State.
According to Professor Ummu, her father enrolled her in school with the dream of seeing her become a medical doctor. Although she ultimately chose a different professional path, she went on to become a Professor of Economics and, by her account, the first woman from Northern Nigeria to attain the rank.
Reflecting on her early marriage, she emphasised that marriage should not prevent women from pursuing their educational and professional aspirations. She encouraged women to remain organised, committed and prayerful while working towards their goals.
Professor Ummu has taught Economics at Bayero University Kano (BUK) for more than three decades. She also serves as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Her story highlights how education, persistence and personal determination can shape a remarkable professional journey, even in the face of significant challenges.
