Trump Announces Deal With Denmark For ‘Permanent’ US Control Of Greenland, Orders Military Presence
According to Trump, the agreement gives the United States the ability to take whatever measures it considers necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the US.
The United States president, Donald Trump, has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that he says gives the United States permanent control over the security and other needs of the Arctic territory, while also paving the way for a major expansion of the US military presence there.
Trump made the announcement on Saturday, saying the agreement was reached following negotiations between US representatives and officials from Denmark and Greenland.
According to Trump, the agreement gives the United States the ability to take whatever measures it considers necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the US.
“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump said.
He said the agreement would come at no cost to the United States and would permanently prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases, maintaining military forces or making sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington’s written approval.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump said.
He described the arrangement as an “Infinite Life” agreement, saying it would have no end.
“For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it,” he said.
“I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation.”
Trump also announced plans for a significantly expanded US military presence on the island.
“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many,” he said, adding that the US would work with Greenland’s population on the development and construction.
The announcement follows months of tension over Trump’s long-standing push for greater US control of Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump said the agreement would be beneficial to the United States, Denmark, Greenland and Washington’s allies.
“This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies,” he said.
“We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land. We will be very protective of it!”
Trump described the development as “a dream come true for the United States of America,” calling it “very important, historic, and special.”
