10 business ideas for young Nigerian entrepreneurs

10 business ideas for young Nigerian entrepreneurs

As technology reshapes business, young Nigerians are finding new opportunities in digital services, online education, e-commerce, creative industries, renewable energy, food delivery and agriculture, creating scalable ventures with strong growth potential, writes GODWIN AIKIGBE

From social media management and artificial intelligence to online learning, e-commerce, renewable energy and agritech, young Nigerians are increasingly exploring emerging business opportunities that require innovation, digital skills and strategic thinking to build sustainable and scalable ventures. The following ten business ideas are emerging as promising opportunities for those seeking to build profitable and sustainable ventures;

Social media services

A social media management agency is a specialised firm that handles a brand’s online presence across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X. They act as an outsourced marketing team, taking over content creation, audience engagement, paid advertising, and performance tracking to help businesses grow.

Key services

Agencies do much more than just publish posts. Their primary offerings include: creating tailored plans based on your target audience, industry trends, and business goals; designing graphics, writing copy, and producing videos that match your brand’s voice; monitoring messages, replying to comments, and building relationships with followers; managing budgets and optimising social media ads to generate leads and drive sales; tracking data like engagement and conversions to ensure the campaigns are delivering a strong return on investment.

Businesses use them because it saves time, by freeing up business owners and internal staff to focus on daily operations; gives brands access to professionals who deeply understand platform algorithms and advertising tools; ensures the brand stays relevant with regular posting and a professional online image; and translates likes and shares into measurable business outcomes, such as website traffic and revenue.

Popular Nigerian blogger Linda Ikeji underscored the importance of media agencies while discussing the launch and business model of “Linda Ikeji Social”, as reported by Vanguard in November 2016.

“There’s a lot of money on advertising on social media. A lot of brands put money on popular online platforms,” said the media entrepreneur.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr Bosun Tijani lent credence to the above at a formal reception organised by the ministry when he assumed office in August 2023, saying, “What drives the economy today is not only oil and gas, but digital technology.”

AI-powered business services

AI-powered business services refer to the use of artificial intelligence technologies, like machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI, to automate tasks, optimise daily operations, and improve decision-making within companies. Instead of replacing human workers, these tools act as intelligent partners that streamline workflows, reduce errors, and save time.

Many organisations, including small businesses and government agencies in Nigeria, are already plugging these tools into their daily routines to do more with less. You can begin by integrating AI into the software your team already uses, or by working with AI and automation specialists to build custom solutions for your specific needs.

They help small businesses use AI for content creation, customer service, data analysis, marketing and administrative tasks.

While highlighting AI’s growing importance to businesses and national competitiveness at the National AI Trust Convening at Warwick Business School, London, in June 2026, Dr Tijani said, “This is a transformative technology. AI is becoming the operating system for how countries compete and how businesses evolve.”

Key benefits

Some of their key benefits include:

Cost and time savings: Automating repetitive, routine tasks frees up employees to focus on creative and strategic work.

Better decision-making: AI can process huge amounts of historical and real-time data to spot patterns, predict trends, and prevent equipment or supply issues.

24/7 customer support: Intelligent chatbots and virtual assistants handle basic questions and guide users through processes around the clock.

Common applications include: using AI chatbots and voice assistants to answer frequently asked questions and track orders; analysing customer behaviour to create highly personalised experiences and targeted marketing campaigns; automating job postings, screening candidate resumes, and managing employee onboarding; detecting fraud, streamlining budgeting, and assisting with loan approvals; and forecasting supply needs, optimising logistics, and preventing bottlenecks before they happen.

Digital learning academy

Online tutoring is a method of teaching where a subject expert helps a student learn or improve their skills over the internet. An academy refers to an educational institution or training platform. Together, an Online Tutoring & Skills Academy is a virtual learning platform that pairs students with expert instructors for personalised education, examination preparation, or vocational training.

These have gained traction from all walks of life, with Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa accentuating the importance of digital competency at the signing ceremony of the Federal Government’s partnership with Coursera at the Education World Forum in London in May 2026, where the Digital Training Academy was unveiled.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda recognises that digital competency is no longer optional. It is foundational,” he noted.

How it works

Virtual classrooms: Lessons happen in real-time using video chat and digital whiteboards so students and teachers can interact face-to-face from anywhere.

Personalised learning: Tutors assess a student’s specific needs and tailor their teaching style to match the student’s pace and goals.

Progress tracking: Many platforms use online student dashboards to track grades, manage assignments, and monitor overall performance.

While discussing how universities were adapting to remote teaching, virtual tutoring and online learning platforms with The PUNCH, former Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Ademola Tayo, said: “E-learning has dramatically changed our perception of the mode of education delivery.”

“Online education will eventually become an integral component of school education,” he added, harping on the need to make online education more interactive.

E-commerce & online store

This has burgeoned in Nigeria over the last two decades following the advent of the internet.

It entails buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. A niche online store is a specific type of e-commerce business that sells curated products to a specific group of people with shared interests, rather than selling to the general public.

E-commerce is basically digital retail. Instead of going to a physical building to buy something, you use a website, app, or social media platform to order it.

You find products on a digital storefront, pay for them securely, and the seller delivers them to your door.

It ranges from massive marketplaces (like Amazon) to small, independent stores and lets you shop 24/7 from anywhere in the world without the high costs of running a physical store.

Sharing his thoughts on Nigeria’s e-commerce market in 2014, the founder of popular trading platform Konga, Sim Shagaya, said: “E-commerce saw a huge boom in 2014 with significant growth in the industry.”

He added: “Africa does not lack an abundance of people to buy things, sell things, or move them around. What Africa lacks is a 21st-century operating system to make it all work.”

Content creation & branding

These are two interconnected strategies used to build an online presence. Content creation is the process of making material like videos, blogs, or podcasts to share ideas. Personal branding is the reputation and trust you build by sharing that material.

These concepts work together to help professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives showcase their expertise and connect with an audience.

Content creation is the act of producing and distributing information in various formats. Think of it as the megaphone that gets your ideas out into the world.

This includes social media posts, blog articles, videos, podcasts, and infographics. It provides value, solves problems, and answers questions for your specific target audience and drives visibility and gets people to notice your work.

Several notable Nigerians have used this to great effect, including social media personality and writer Alabi Lawrence, who described how he moved from blogging into video content and social media during an interview with The PUNCH earlier this month thus: “The earliest moment I realised social media could become a career was in 2015 when Linda Ikeji bought a car and a house through blogging.”

Digital marketing agency

This is a company that helps businesses promote their products or services online. Unlike traditional marketing firms that focus on print or TV, these agencies specialise in reaching audiences through online channels like search engines, social media, and websites.

Digital marketer and Director of Myndzone Media, Joshua Oguntan, highlighted the essence of digital marketing while discussing his career and the opportunities in digital marketing in an interview with Saturday Beats/The PUNCH, published in July 2023: “Digital marketing offers a unique blend of creativity, strategy, and data-driven decision-making.”

He went further to explain how businesses can use digital channels to reach customers more effectively, saying: “Professionals across various sectors can make the most of digital marketing by understanding their target audience and leveraging data to create personalised and targeted campaigns.”

Key services

Digital marketing agencies blend strategy, creativity, and technology to attract and convert customers. Common services include: optimising websites so they rank higher on search engines like Google; creating content and managing brand identity across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok; running paid campaigns on search engines and social media; building fast, user-friendly, and mobile-responsive websites; and using blogs, videos, and newsletters to build brand awareness and loyalty.

Many organisations choose to outsource their internet marketing rather than building an in-house team.

Benefits include: access to a team of specialists like graphic designers, writers, and strategists; agencies use analytics to track campaign performance in real-time and provide detailed reports; eliminate the overhead costs of hiring and training full-time internal staff; and offer businesses services such as SEO, paid advertising, email marketing, website promotion and lead generation.

During an interview with The PUNCH on 3 June 2025, digital marketing expert Joel Ozue stated the importance of realistic expectations and proper strategy in optimising digital marketing, saying:

“Let’s be real, digital marketing sounds good on paper. Everyone talks about it at seminars in Lagos, Nairobi, and Accra. But many African SMEs are still not getting the results they hope for.”

Renewable energy services

Renewable energy services refer to the professional solutions, technologies, and support related to generating power from clean, naturally replenished sources like the sun, wind, and water. These services help homes, businesses, and communities switch from traditional fossil fuels to sustainable, eco-friendly energy options.

Types

These services are a broad field, covering many different types of help for green energy projects.

These include:

Design and installation: Building and setting up renewable systems like solar panels or wind turbines for homes and offices.

Project feasibility and planning: Checking a site’s location to see if it gets enough sun, wind, or water before starting an energy project.

Maintenance and repair: Taking care of green energy equipment to make sure it works well and lasts a long time.

Energy trading and sourcing: Helping large businesses buy, sell, or trade clean energy (like biomethane) across different markets.

Sustainability tracking: Helping companies measure their carbon emissions and report how much they are helping the environment.

At the signing of a partnership between Imperium and Baobab+ in Lagos, as reported by The PUNCH in July 2024, Head of Renewable Energy (Digital) at Imperium, Ayo Falola, hinted at the benefits of renewable energy: “Partnering with Baobab+ Nigeria allows us to take a significant leap towards providing Nigerians with the tools they need to transition to sustainable energy.”

Speaking at the Renewable Energy Summit at Revocube Energies’ headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, in the same year, co-founder and CEO of Revocube Energies, Olanrewaju Ogunkunle, said: “One of the major costs of running businesses in Nigeria is energy, and we believe that if the cost of energy can be tackled effectively, businesses will have proper structure for their finance.”

Food delivery

This is also called a Cloud kitchen or a ghost or dark kitchen, which entails a delivery-only restaurant with no dine-in seating, storefront, or waitstaff. It operates purely as a cooking and food production hub. Customers order food online through apps or websites, and delivery drivers bring it to their doors.

How it works

Online ordering: All orders are placed digitally via third-party food delivery platforms or a restaurant’s own app.

Preparation: The kitchen focuses entirely on cooking and packing food quickly and efficiently for delivery.

No foot traffic: Since there are no dine-in guests, these kitchens can be located in cheaper, off-street areas, significantly lowering rent.

Shared spaces: Sometimes multiple restaurant brands rent separate stalls or share the same large commercial kitchen space.

Benefits

Lower costs: Eliminating the dining room, front-of-house staff, and expensive storefront decor drastically reduces overhead costs.

Flexibility: Restaurants can easily experiment with new menus or launch multiple virtual brands out of the same kitchen.

High efficiency: Operations are heavily streamlined to prioritise fast cooking and order fulfilment.

This is basically about operating a specialised food business from a small kitchen and using social media and delivery platforms to reach customers without the cost of a traditional restaurant.

CEO and co-founder of FoodCourt, Henry Nneji, explained how FoodCourt uses the cloud-kitchen model to reduce costs during an interview with The PUNCH in December 2024, explaining: “Our unique business model, centred on operating dark kitchens, has positioned us to navigate these challenges effectively.”

“This model allows us to cross-utilise resources across all our brands and even launch new restaurant concepts without requiring significant capital investments,” he added, further explaining the advantage of operating multiple virtual restaurant brands from shared kitchens.

Freelance creative studio

A freelance creative studio is a small, independent business or creative collective run by freelance professionals. It bridges the gap between hiring a single freelancer and using a large traditional advertising agency.

These studios typically consist of two to twelve people who collaborate on projects like branding, web development, video production, and content creation.

Freelance creative studios offer several distinct benefits for businesses:

Diverse skill sets: They provide access to multiple creative talents, such as designers, writers, and developers, without the heavy overhead of a large ad agency.

Project continuity: Unlike hiring separate freelancers, a studio offers a “unified brain trust”. The same team handles your project from start to finish, ensuring a consistent vision and preventing delays.

Cost efficiency: Clients pay for defined deliverables rather than hourly agency rates, resulting in transparent budgeting and lower overall costs.

Flexibility: They are generally more agile and collaborative than traditional agencies, adapting easily to different project sizes and needs.

The founder of Adegraphics Creative Studio, Adedamola Biolatiri, explained what inspired him to establish his creative studio. “It started as a talent, and the urge to create things with my mind and hands,” he told The PUNCH in September 2023.

“I employ integrity in all my activities. The field of graphics design is one of endless possibilities and opportunities,” Biolatiri added, while advising young entrepreneurs seeking to enter the graphics design and printing industry.

Agribusiness & agritech

Agribusiness is the business side of farming, encompassing all activities involved in producing, processing, and distributing agricultural goods. Agritech (agricultural technology) is a specialised sector within agribusiness that uses modern tools like artificial intelligence, IoT, and drones to make farming more efficient and sustainable.

Together, they bridge the gap between traditional farming and modern commercial markets.

Agribusiness is the entire commercial supply chain of food and fibre. It connects the farm to the consumer’s plate.

Key areas include:

Farming inputs: Seed production, fertiliser companies, and machinery manufacturing.

Primary production: Growing crops, raising livestock, and forestry.

Processing: Turning raw crops into consumer products, like packaging, canning, and food manufacturing.

Distribution: Logistics, commodity trading, and retail sales.

Agritech

Agritech refers to the use of technology and scientific innovation to improve the performance, yield, and sustainability of the food system.

Tools

Agritech tools include:

IoT sensors: Monitoring soil moisture, weather, and crop health in real time.

Drones and robotics: Automating manual tasks like pesticide spraying, planting, and harvesting.

Farm management software: Using data to optimise crop care and predict market prices.

Precision irrigation: Applying water and fertilisers only exactly where and when plants need them.

While agribusiness manages the finances, trade, and logistics of agriculture, agritech provides the digital and scientific tools to make that supply chain faster, cheaper, and greener. For example, a large commercial farm (agribusiness) might use artificial intelligence (agritech) to decide exactly how much water a field needs, reducing waste while increasing profit.

Agribusiness explores opportunities in poultry, fish farming, food processing, farm-to-market distribution, agricultural logistics or technology-enabled farming.

While discussing agricultural opportunities and technology adoption in Lagos, as reported by The PUNCH, Vice-President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Abimbola Olashore, asserted: “Agribusiness is the biggest contributor to Nigeria’s GDP and the largest employer of labour, but many still associate it with poverty.”

“Agriculture is big business. People are quietly becoming billionaires from cocoa and palm oil, yet it is ignored,” he added at the same Lagos discussion, urging Nigerians to view agriculture as a commercial opportunity rather than a subsistence activity.

For the founder of Afe Babalola University, Afe Babalola, SAN, the business side of agriculture must be extensively harnessed to address economic challenges.

“We must add business to agriculture,” the legal luminary noted during his investiture as life patron of the Nigerian Association of Hairdressers, Cosmetologists and Barbers in Ado-Ekiti.

He went further to stress the need to combine agriculture with technology, innovation and value addition, saying: “We need to develop our own technology, improve our own farming practice, innovate, invent and create massive and robust markets for our unique African agricultural products.”
