159 killed, 10 missing after typhoon triggers flood in China

At least 156 people have been killed and 10 others missing after Typhoon Maysak triggered severe flooding in China’s southwestern Guangxi region.

In July, China was hit by three typhoons — Maysak, Bavi and Noul — causing widespread damage and disruption across several regions.

According to local authorities, the region experienced “historically rare, widespread and persistent heavy rainfall” after the typhoon struck, triggering floods and breaches at several reservoirs.

At least 107 of the deaths were linked to reservoir breaches, while more than 1.6 million people were affected by disasters in the two worst-hit cities.

More than 320,000 residents were relocated or evacuated as floodwaters disrupted communities and damaged infrastructure across the region.

Authorities said Guangxi has entered the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase, with efforts focused on repairing damaged infrastructure and supporting affected communities.

The country’s ministry of emergency management said natural disasters across China caused direct economic losses of 57.15 billion yuan ($8.5 billion).
