According to him, insecurity in the South-East has reduced significantly since the arrests of key separatist figures, arguing that Kanu’s death would further restore peace in the region.
Entrepreneur Chigozie Nnabugwu has sparked controversy after calling on the Nigerian government to execute the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, claiming that such a move would restore normalcy in the South-East.
Nnabugwu made the remarks during an appearance on News Central TV’s Breakfast Xtra programme, monitored by SaharaReporters.
According to him, insecurity in the South-East has reduced significantly since the arrests of key separatist figures, arguing that Kanu’s death would further restore peace in the region.
“I concur with that. Let me be sincere with you,” Nnabugwu said.
“The time they arrested Nnamdi Kanu, it was like up and down. The time they arrested Simon Ekpa, it reduced by about 50 per cent. The time Nnamdi Kanu was convicted, it reduced to about 10 per cent. That’s what we are battling now.”
He then urged the Nigerian government to kill the IPOB leader.
“If Nnamdi Kanu is dead today, if the government of Nigeria will kill Nnamdi Kanu, trust me, normalcy will start coming. That’s all every Igbo man prays for,” he said.
Nnabugwu also argued that military operations alone would not end the violence in the South-East, insisting that community leaders, religious organisations and intellectuals must help counter what he described as misinformation and hate speech.
“I want all these organisations in Nigeria, the Catholic bishops, Pentecostal pastors and educated people, to come on air and educate our people on the consequences of what we are doing. That is the only way to achieve this,” the businessman said.
“The military are not the Holy Spirit that is everywhere. Bombs are still killing people in my community. The military have done a lot, but these people keep planting them again. The only way to solve this problem is to let every Igbo man know the truth and stand by the truth,” he added.
Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) from 2021 to 2025 after he was extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria.
In November 2025, the Nigerian Government secured a life sentence conviction against him on terrorism-related charges stemming from his separatist agitation for an independent Biafra. He is currently serving his term at a Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Sokoto, northwestern Nigeria.
Earlier this month, SaharaReporters reported the arrest of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a medical expert said to have conducted an independent assessment of the health condition of the imprisoned leader of IPOB.
According to legal practitioner Chief Barrister Maxwell Opara, the arrest took place at Aghaji’s residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Friday, July 3, 2026.
In a statement, Opara said, “Information has reached me that Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, the medical expert who reportedly issued independent medical reports on the health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on 3rd July, 2026.”
He further stated, “Prof. Aghaji’s reported medical assessments were said to have countered the official medical report presented by the Department of State Services, DSS.”
