In the Yoruba language, the African buffalo is called Ẹfọn. This animal is deeply rooted in local folklore, proverbs, and hunting traditions. Hunters who successfully track an Ẹfọn are historically celebrated for their bravery due to the immense danger involved.

Before now, hunting buffaloes in Osun State carries severe risks. A separate hunting expedition in the Lawoka community of Ile-Ife resulted in a wild buffalo fatally goring a renowned local hunter.

While these hunting feats draw public amazement on social media, they also spark critical discussions regarding wildlife depletion. The African buffalo population in Nigeria has faced sharp declines due to habitat loss and the high commercial demand for bushmeat (eran igbe) in local markets.
