Mother of Six Loses Four Children to Devastating Flood in Calabar After Heavy Rainfall

A heartbreaking tragedy has been reported in Calabar, Cross River State, where a mother of six allegedly lost four of her children following severe flooding and erosion triggered by hours of torrential rainfall.

The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Friday, July 10, 2026, after persistent heavy rains inundated several communities across the city.

The downpour caused widespread flooding, submerged homes and roads, and led to extensive destruction of property in different parts of Calabar.

According to reports, the victims were swept away by raging floodwaters as the disaster unfolded, leaving their family and residents of the affected community in deep mourning.

The tragic loss has sparked renewed concerns over the recurring impact of flooding in the city, particularly during the rainy season.

Residents say the heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems in several neighbourhoods, while erosion further worsened the situation, making movement difficult and placing many lives at risk.

The heartbreaking incident has reignited calls for improved flood-control measures, better urban planning, regular maintenance of drainage channels, and stronger emergency response systems to protect lives and property during periods of intense rainfall.

Flooding has become a recurring challenge in many Nigerian cities, especially during the rainy season, often resulting in displacement, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and, in the worst cases, tragic loss of life.

As condolences continue to pour in for the bereaved family, many Nigerians are urging authorities at all levels to strengthen flood prevention infrastructure and disaster preparedness to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The reported incident serves as another painful reminder of the urgent need for sustainable environmental management, effective drainage systems, and proactive measures to safeguard vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of flooding.
