Lagos-based pastor has stirred widespread reactions after advising young men to stay away from romantic relationships for at least three years if they hope to achieve financial stability.
The cleric, identified as Pastor John, made the remarks while preaching on the streets of Lagos, where he encouraged unmarried men to avoid spending money on girlfriends and instead focus on saving and building their finances.
In a video that has since circulated on social media, Pastor John argued that many young men spend excessively on their girlfriends while neglecting their own financial growth.
According to him, some men have invested so much money in their relationships that the amount spent could have been enough to purchase a commercial minibus, popularly known as a korope, yet they do not own even a bicycle.
“Your girlfriend dey fat, you dey lean, your trouser don dey slack. Some men in Lagos, the money wey you dey give women don reach to buy korope. But common bicycle, them no get,” he said.
The preacher further advised young men who are not yet married to abstain from dating for three years, insisting that such discipline would significantly improve their financial prospects.
He also discouraged prolonged boyfriend-and-girlfriend relationships, urging those who are ready for commitment to marry instead of spending years in expensive dating relationships.
“Stop doing boyfriend and girlfriend. Marry direct so you can save. As a young man, you never marry, if you want to make it in Lagos, stay three years without woman and you are going to make it,” he added.
