South African World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams dies by suicide at 25
South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away at the age of 25.
The heartbreaking news was first reported by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano before being confirmed by multiple international media outlets, including The Guardian. Authorities have not officially disclosed the cause of death, while police have confirmed that an investigation is underway after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Cape Town.
Adams had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in all three of the country’s group-stage matches. Although he missed the Round of 32 defeat to Canada, his performances during the tournament highlighted his growing importance to the national team.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield talents, Adams began his football journey through the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC, becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. He went on to make 139 appearances, helping the club win the 2023 Carling Knockout before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
