22 Soldiers, Civilian Volunteers Killed in Coordinated Jihadist Attacks in Burkina Faso
At least 22 soldiers and civilian militia members have been killed in coordinated attacks by suspected jihadist fighters in northern Burkina Faso, according to security sources.
The attacks reportedly took place over the weekend, with one of the deadliest assaults targeting a military base in Di, near Dedougou, on Saturday morning.
Security sources said about 14 soldiers and seven civilian volunteers supporting the military lost their lives during the attack. Another assault in Solhan also resulted in several deaths, although the exact number was not disclosed.
One of the sources described the incidents as causing heavy human and material losses.
A separate attack was also reported on Sunday at a military post in Seguenega, near Kaya, in the country’s north central region.
According to a police source, the attacks appeared to have been carefully coordinated to inflict the highest possible casualties across different regions.
Despite the deadly assaults, security forces said they launched a strong counter operation that helped stop the attacks from spreading further.
The military added that follow up operations carried out with the support of senior commanders led to the killing of dozens of suspected terrorists and the recovery of weapons, military equipment and other logistical items.

Burkina Faso has been under military rule since 2022 and has continued to battle insurgent groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State for more than a decade.
To strengthen its fight against the insurgency, the military has recruited civilian volunteers to support security operations, although many have lost their lives in the conflict.
