Adeboye calls for global support to end insecurity, restore peace in Nigeria
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has called for greater international diplomatic support to help Nigeria tackle insecurity and restore peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims.
Speaking during an address in the United States, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) said the worsening insecurity and persecution in parts of Nigeria have become increasingly difficult to bear.
Responding to criticism that he had not paid enough attention to Christians in Northern Nigeria, Adeboye said he currently oversees more than 8,000 churches in the region.
“As of now, in the North where the persecution is supposed to be toughest, I have more than 8,000 churches under my care.”
The cleric recalled that in November last year, he publicly advised the Nigerian government to urgently engage U.S. President Donald Trump diplomatically, issue a firm directive to security chiefs to end insecurity within 90 days, and crack down on those sponsoring terrorism and kidnapping.
According to him, he later repeated the same recommendations during a meeting with Nigeria’s President and First Lady.
Appealing to the United States for support, Adeboye urged the country to use its diplomatic influence to help Nigeria overcome its security challenges rather than military force.
“Help us. Use your diplomatic influence. All we’re asking for is that Christians and Muslims can live together in peace.”
He also stressed that Muslims should not be regarded as enemies, saying peaceful coexistence remains possible.
“I don’t even want the Muslim to die because they are my potential brother. If you kill them, who will I have to convert?”
Reflecting on his upbringing, Adeboye said he came from a family where Christians and Muslims lived together harmoniously, noting that several of his relatives practised Islam.
“We were living together in peace… We want that back.”
