Simy Nwankwo Receives Hero’s Welcome in Anambra as Fans Celebrate Football Icon
The homecoming celebration for Nigerian international striker Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo, popularly known as “Simy,” was a warm and joyful event held in Nkpor-Agu, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, on June 21, 2026.
The event, titled “The Homecoming,” served as a heartfelt tribute to his successful season in Saudi Arabia and a recognition of his impressive football journey, which spans more than a decade and includes numerous international appearances and notable club accomplishments. This joyful, one-day event was divided into two memorable parts:
• Thanksgiving Mass, which started with a powerful service at Holy Cross Parish, Nkpor-Agu, attended by family, friends, fans, and dignitaries from both local and overseas. The service featured heartfelt prayers, hymns, and a special homily reflecting on Simy’s perseverance and community impact.
* The second part was an All-Star-studded Novelty Match, an exciting exhibition game, held at United Primary School grounds, showcasing local talent and football legends. It included Nigeria’s football icons, such as former Super Eagles stars Uche Nwofor as well as rising talents like Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi. Also present was Ralph Chidozie George, a SuperSport Commentator and Naija Made co-presenter.
The event also honored Chinedu Amadi, SIMY’s long-time Manager who has played a crucial role in managing his career and international transfers. Standing 1.98 meters tall, SIMY is celebrated for his impressive career in Europe, especially with Italian club FC Crotone, where he became the club’s all-time top scorer with 109 goals in 175 appearances. He also represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, showcasing his talent on the global stage. His return was an inspiring moment for young football fans in Anambra and beyond, exemplifying his resilience, dedication, and growth as a professional athlete and inspiring many aspiring players in the region.
