Abia police arrest man seen assaulting woman in viral video over pot of soup
The Abia police command says its operatives have arrested a man captured in a viral video assaulting a woman during a dispute over a pot of soup.
On Saturday, a viral video showing an able-bodied man brutally assaulting a young woman sparked outrage on social media.
The pair were reportedly staying in the man’s home when an argument over a pot of soup escalated into a violent altercation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson of the command, identified the suspect as Agwu Ukpo, 37, from Akanu Ohafia in Ohafia LGA of Abia state.
Chinaka said operatives of the command’s violent crime response unit (VCRU) arrested the suspect following actionable intelligence.
According to her, Ukpo was seen in the viral video allegedly assaulting the woman identified as Amarachi Chiyere during the altercation.
“The case is currently under discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement reads.
The police spokesperson said the command “strongly condemned” the alleged act, describing it as “barbaric and inhumane”.
She reiterated that domestic violence is unacceptable under any circumstances and warned residents against all forms of violence.
Chinaka added that the command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators of crime are brought to book.
