US Launches Strikes Against Iran After Apache Helicopter Downing In Fresh Middle-East Crisis

The United States military has launched what it described as “self-defence strikes” against Iran following the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter, marking a fresh escalation in the already volatile standoff between Washington and Tehran.
The announcement was made by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said the operation began at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the orders of President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on its official social media account, CENTCOM said the strikes were carried out in response to the destruction of a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter a day earlier.
“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces began launching self-defense strikes against Iran at 5 p.m. ET today at the Commander in Chief’s direction, in response to yesterday’s downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter. The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression,” the military command said on Tuesday.
The strikes followed comments by President Trump, who accused Iran of shooting down the helicopter during operations near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and vowed that the United States would respond.
According to US officials, the Apache helicopter was brought down near the coast of Oman on Monday. Both crew members survived and were rescued in a joint military operation that reportedly involved a U.S. Navy unmanned surface vessel, marking one of the first known combat rescue operations involving a drone boat.
While CENTCOM has not disclosed the full scope of the operation or the specific targets struck inside Iran, reports indicate that Iranian radar installations and air-defense systems were among the likely targets. Iranian media reported explosions in parts of Hormozgan Province near the Strait of Hormuz shortly after the US operation commenced.
The latest military exchange comes against the backdrop of months of heightened tensions between the United States, Iran and regional actors, including Israel. Despite repeated assertions by the Trump administration that it seeks a diplomatic settlement with Tehran, military confrontations have continued to threaten efforts to stabilise the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, where the helicopter incident occurred, remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant percentage of global oil shipments passing through the narrow waterway. Any military confrontation in the area carries the risk of disrupting global energy markets and international shipping routes.
The helicopter’s downing represented a significant setback for U.S. forces, with reports describing it as the first known loss of an Apache helicopter in the current confrontation involving Iran.
Iran had not officially responded to the American strikes as of the time of filing this report. However, Iranian officials have previously warned that foreign military forces operating close to Iranian territory face risks and have maintained that the country’s armed forces remain on high alert.
The exchange is expected to fuel concerns about a broader regional conflict at a time when diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions remain fragile.
