NSCDC Arrests Suspected Fraudster, Fake Soldier In Kwara, Recovers Multiple ATM Cards

The arrest was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Michael Shola.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has arrested a 34-year-old man, identified as Akinola Tosin, for alleged fraud and impersonation following accusations that he defrauded a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator using a fake bank transfer alert.

The arrest was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Michael Shola.

According to the NSCDC, the suspect was apprehended after a complaint was lodged against him for allegedly obtaining money under false pretences by presenting a fake debit alert to a POS operator.

Preliminary investigations by the Corps revealed that Akinola allegedly collected the sum of N40,600 from the POS operator after presenting what appeared to be a successful bank transfer notification.

The fake alert reportedly deceived the victim into believing that payment had been made, prompting the release of cash to the suspect.

The NSCDC further disclosed that investigations uncovered another layer of alleged criminal activity involving the suspect.

According to the statement, Akinola had allegedly been impersonating a member of the Nigerian Army using a fake military identity card bearing his name.

The suspect was also found in possession of military-related paraphernalia, which investigators believe he used to gain the confidence of members of the public and facilitate his alleged fraudulent operations.

The statement noted that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to previous fraudulent activities involving multiple victims.

Investigators also uncovered the involvement of a suspected accomplice identified as Feranmi Idoko Godwin, who is currently on the run.

“The suspect also confessed to previous fraudulent activities involving multiple victims, while further investigation uncovered a suspected accomplice, identified as one Feranmi Idoko Godwin, who is currently at large,” Shola said.

The Command disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and conclude investigations into the matter.

Items recovered from Akinola at the time of his arrest include two Opay ATM cards, two UBA ATM cards, two First Bank ATM cards, one PalmPay ATM card and one National Identity Card.

The NSCDC said the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

“The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon the conclusion of investigations,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Commandant of the NSCDC in Kwara State, Commandant Abbas Ndah Mohammed, reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state.

Mohammed stressed that the Corps would continue to intensify efforts aimed at combating fraud, impersonation and other forms of criminality.

He also urged members of the public, particularly business owners and POS operators, to exercise caution and verify electronic transactions before releasing cash, goods or other valuables to customers.

“The NSCDC Kwara State Command remains unwavering in its commitment to combating crime and other forms of criminality,” the Commandant said.
