Former Serie A defender Marios Oikonomou dies at 33 after scooter crash

The football world is mourning the passing of former Bologna and Greek international defender Marios Oikonomou, who died on June 1, 2026, at the age of 33.
According to Italian sports media reports, Oikonomou succumbed to severe head injuries nine days after being involved in a devastating traffic accident in his hometown of Ioannina, Greece.
The crash occurred on May 23, 2026, when his scooter collided with a vehicle driven by a 63-year-old motorist.
The center-back underwent emergency surgery, including a decompressive craniectomy, but remained in a coma in intensive care before ultimately losing his life.
Oikonomou built a prominent professional career across Europe, making a lasting impression in Italy’s Serie A and Serie B where he registered appearances for Bologna, Cagliari, SPAL, Bari, and Sampdoria.
According to Yahoo Sports, his most notable club tenure was with Bologna, where he made 74 appearances and helped the team secure a vital promotion.
Beyond his extensive career in Italy, he earned six senior caps for the Greek national football team and went on to win the Danish league title with F.C. Copenhagen in 2022 before ending his playing career with Greek side Panetolikos.
