Gunmen Kill Eight, Burn Houses in Fresh Attack on Imo Community
At least eight people have been reportedly killed after unidentified gunmen launched a deadly attack on Abacheke Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed a security checkpoint in the community on Saturday and opened fire, triggering panic and chaos among residents. The assault reportedly left several people dead, including a security operative.
Witnesses described the incident as a terrifying ordeal, saying the gunmen fired repeatedly and operated for some time before setting houses on fire.
“They killed about eight people, including a security man. The attack was directed at a checkpoint. It was like a war situation. They shot continuously and later set about six houses ablaze,” a community source disclosed.
The attack has left residents living in fear, with many reportedly fleeing the area over concerns that the assailants could return.
“There is serious tension in the community. People are scared, and some families have already left their homes for safer locations,” the source added.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
As of the time of reporting, the Imo State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. Efforts to obtain a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful.
