Akpabio Breaks Silence Over Viral Anti-North Comment Ahead Of 2027

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has denied allegations linking him to a controversial statement directed at Northerners ahead of the 2027 general elections.

NEWSFLASHER gathered that a viral video featuring one Garus Gololo alleged that Akpabio warned Northerners to either support President Bola Tinubu in 2027 or leave the country.

However, Akpabio’s office has described the claim as false, malicious, and misleading.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Jibril Lawal Tafida, the Senate President firmly denied ever making such remarks.

Tafida said the allegation was a calculated attempt to misinform the public and damage Akpabio’s image.

“We wish to state clearly and unequivocally that the President of the Senate never made such a statement. This claim is completely false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public,” the statement read.

He urged Nigerians to ignore the viral video, stressing that the comments being circulated do not reflect Akpabio’s character or public conduct.

According to Tafida, the Senate President remains committed to national unity and would never make statements capable of dividing Nigerians along ethnic or regional lines.

He also called on security agencies to investigate Gololo and determine the origin of the allegation, while challenging him to provide evidence showing where and when Akpabio allegedly made the statement.

“The public deserves to know the source of these baseless allegations,” Tafida added.

The Senate President’s aide further appealed to Northerners and Nigerians in general not to fall for what he described as provocative attempts to create tension and disaffection ahead of the 2027 elections.

He warned that spreading unverified claims on sensitive issues such as ethnicity and national unity could worsen political tensions if left unchecked.

Meanwhile, a Northern group identified as the Northern Democratic Front (NDF) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, demanding the arrest and investigation of Gololo over the alleged defamatory claims against Akpabio.

The petition, signed by the group’s National President, Engr. Musa Abba, and National Secretary, Barrister Bitrus Yohana, argued that the allegation could incite public unrest and threaten national peace.

The group also accused Gololo of using offensive and disrespectful language against the Senate President, describing the act as an attempt to tarnish Akpabio’s reputation and undermine the office he occupies.

The NDF urged the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the matter thoroughly and prosecute Gololo if found guilty of criminal defamation, spreading false information, or conduct capable of disturbing public peace.
