GBOKO, Nigeria — In a stunning and damning disciplinary action, the Diocese of Gboko, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has formally dismissed Rev. Amos Aondofa Aondoakaa from the priesthood and withdrawn his licence with immediate effect, citing a catalogue of grave offences including sexual immorality inside the church, occult practices, domestic violence, threats to church members, and blatant defiance of ecclesiastical authority.
In a strongly worded Letter of Dismissal and Withdrawal of Licence dated 6th May, 2026, and signed by the Rt. Rev. E.F.G. Nyitsse, Bishop of Gboko, the diocese accused the embattled priest of desecrating the sacred space of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Adek aa, where he was allegedly caught red-handed engaging in sexual immorality in the vestry with a woman who fled through the altar.
The letter further detailed Aondoakaa’s illicit three-year sexual affair with Miss Juliana Poor, a parishioner entrusted to him for mentoring by her parents. The relationship reportedly produced multiple pregnancies, including one abortion carried out with his consent and a second ongoing pregnancy. He is accused of beating and sending away his wife, Mrs. Charity Aondofa Aondoakaa, on multiple occasions because she opposed the affair.
Church authorities also found him guilty of issuing ungodly threats and intimidation against church members, including threats to unleash thugs on them. Additional allegations include involvement in fetish practices and doctrinal errors such as consulting native doctors, using magic stones, spiritual oils, divination, and other unorthodox rituals disguised as deliverance and prayer ministry within Anglican church premises.
The dismissal letter highlighted Aondoakaa’s “dubious character,” financial misconduct, promotion of division within the church, and repeated defiance of suspension orders. Despite being suspended in February 2026, he allegedly continued to celebrate Holy Communion, organize programs, and present himself as a priest in good standing.
Citing Canon XVI (Discipline of the Clergy) and other provisions of the Church of Nigeria Constitution 2020, the diocese described his conduct as a “notorious scandalous life,” gross misconduct, and a direct violation of his ordination vows.
The Bishop directed Aondoakaa to immediately cease using the title “Reverend,” return his Licence of Ordination and all church property within 72 hours, and warned that any further impersonation of a priest would attract civil legal action.
This explosive case has sent shockwaves through the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, exposing deep moral and spiritual failings within the clergy and raising serious questions about pastoral integrity and accountability in the Church.
