Sultan of Sokoto reveals the fate of “those who kîll shouting Allahu Akbar”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar III, has countered the narrative that Nigeria’s insecurity is caused by religious agenda especially against the Nigerian christians.
The Sultan argued that Nigeria’s security challenges are misunderstood and wrongly linked to Islamic agenda against Christians. According to him, there is urgent need for the Nigerian political and religious leaders to reset how the country’s insecurity is viewed.
He explained that the misunderstanding of the nature of Nigeria’s security problems is deepening distrust and suspicion in the country.
The sultan made the remark while speaking at the trianual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), alongside with the Secretary of the Government of The Federation, George Akume, and the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Daniel Okoh.
The sultan emphasized that there is no agenda to wipe out the Christian population in Nigeria, warning that those who kîll in the name of Allah are criminal and not acting in line with the Islamic teachings. He stated that kîlling of innocent people while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ is un-islamic and that those who engage in such act will go to hell.
Today, as I stand here, I want to affirm that Muslims are not in a hurry and are not planning anything like decimating the population of Christians in Nigeria.
We are not in any position whatsoever to remove Christians from Nigeria. No, it is not possible.’’
Let us get the narrative right, it is not about religion. Let us stop bringing religion into it. Let us call them what they are, criminals, not Muslim criminals, not Muslim terrorists, not Muslim bandits. Even if someone claims to be Muslim, what they do goes against Islam,’’ the Sultan said.
Somebody can go to the market, blows his or herself up, kîll people and shout ‘Allahu Akbar’. Yes, God is great, but you are going to hell. They will suffer for taking innocent lives.’’
He also emphasized the importance of dialogue in conflict resolution, encouraging those in authority to employ dialogue as a veritable means of resolving conflict.
