Boko Haram Attacks Chad Military Base, Kills 23 Security Personnel, Injures 26 Others

Islamist Boko Haram militants have attacked a military base in Chad, killing at least 23 security personnel and injuring 26 others, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

The army said it repelled the attack after engaging the militants, according to Reuters.

Boko Haram militants have since 2009 extended their reach from northeast Nigeria to western Chad.

The Lake Chad region has experienced attacks on military installations in recent years.

Chad President Mahamat Idriss Deby condemned the attack in a statement posted on Facebook.

“Once again, the terrorist nebula Boko Haram carried out, last night, a cowardly attack on our military base in Barka Tolorom, in Lake Chad province,” he said.

“At this time of collection, my first thoughts are with our brave fallen soldiers, these heroes who brave all dangers to ensure our safety and the integrity of our territory. The sacrifice of our soldiers will never be in vain.

“To the bereaved families, I express my deepest condolences to the Nation and to the wounded soldiers who took care of, I wish a speedy recovery.”

“In the face of barbarism, Chad stands tall, united and unyielding. Obscurantism will never prevail over the Republic. We will continue the fight with renewed determination, until this threat is completely eradicated,” he added.
