INEC Bows to Pressure, Lists Baba-Ahmed as PRP National Chairman on Portal After Public Outcry
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday updated its portal to formally recognise Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed as National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, ending days of tension over the omission of the party’s new leadership.
Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to Vice-President Kashim Shettima, was elected PRP chairman at the party’s March 28, 2026 convention in Abuja. But nearly a month later, INEC had yet to upload his name and those of other National Working Committee members, sparking protests from party members and a statement from the PRP questioning the delay despite INEC’s presence at the convention.
National Publicity Secretary Muhammed Ishaq first raised the alarm Thursday, with Baba-Ahmed insisting the absence of names “does not represent any legal hindrance” but urging INEC to act. Within 24 hours, the commission updated its portal, listing Baba-Ahmed alongside National Secretary Kanu Uchenna, Treasurer Bayawo Abdullahi, Financial Secretary Chuka Patrick, and Legal Adviser Vincent Okudu.
The update effectively ends the uncertainty and signals INEC’s recognition of the PRP’s new NWC, one of Nigeria’s oldest surviving political parties.
