A power sector official in Bayelsa has sparked reactions after explaining why electricity bills can remain high despite limited supply.

In a video circulating online, the official said that when power is restored after long outages, households often run multiple appliances at once, leading to heavy consumption within a short period

“Energy that’s supposed to be consumed for one week has been consumed in two hours,” he said, stressing that billing is based on usage rather than the number of hours electricity is supplied.

He added that even brief access to power can result in significant energy consumption depending on how it is used.
