Bandits Kill Political Aspirant’s Brother In Late-Night  Attack, Loot Home

The assailants were said to have stormed the aspirant’s residence, where he narrowly escaped unharmed, while his brother was killed and valuables were looted from the house.

Bandits have reportedly killed the brother of a political aspirant, Hon. Haruna Abdulrazaq Mai-Laya, during a late-night attack in Mai-Laya community, Maska Ward, Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The assailants were said to have stormed the aspirant’s residence, where he narrowly escaped unharmed, while his brother was killed and valuables were looted from the house.

According to security expert Bakatsine, the incident has plunged the community into mourning, marking yet another tragic attack amid ongoing security challenges in the area.

In an X post, the security expert noted that the attack reflects the continued vulnerability of rural communities in Katsina State to armed banditry.

“How many more lives must be shattered before authorities restore lasting security in rural communities?” he asked.

Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the Katsina State Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The state has continued to witness a series of deadly bandit attacks. On Monday, SaharaReporters reported that gunmen launched a fresh assault on Gurbi Village in Kankara Local Government Area, killing at least 11 people and injuring two others.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sadiq, said in a statement issued to journalists in Katsina that the attack occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday and also left two residents injured.

The statement read, “The Katsina State Police Command regrets to inform the public of a bandits’ attack on Gurbi Village, Kankara LGA, Katsina State, which occurred at about 2:40pm on April 26, 2026.

“Suspected bandits attacked the village and fatally shot 11 persons, while two others sustained varying degrees of injury before the arrival of security agencies.

“On receipt of the distress call, a joint security team comprising the police, military, and other sister security agencies, led by the DPO, promptly mobilised to the scene. The assailants fled on sighting the advancing security forces.”

“Normalcy has since been restored to the area. The injured victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased have been released to their families for burial in line with Islamic rites,” the statement added.
